Brazilian Wax vs. Bikini Wax: Which One Should You Get?

Written by a Licensed Esthetician · Full Circle Beauty, Point Loma, San Diego · Updated March 2026

One of the most common questions we get at Full Circle Beauty: "What's the difference between a Brazilian wax and a bikini wax — and which one should I get?" Here's the breakdown from our licensed esthetician in Point Loma, San Diego.

Coverage: What Gets Removed

This is the key difference. A bikini wax cleans up the sides and top of the bikini line — anything that would show outside a standard swimsuit bottom. Think of it as a tidy-up that keeps everything neat and swimsuit-ready without going further.

A Brazilian wax removes everything — front, sides, and back — with the option to leave a small strip or triangle if you prefer. It's a full reset from front to back. Many clients choose full removal; others prefer a small landing strip. You can discuss your preference with your esthetician before starting.

Pain Level

Both are completely manageable with an experienced esthetician and quality hard wax. The bikini wax is quicker and covers less area, so most people find it slightly less intense. The Brazilian involves more sensitive areas, but the discomfort is brief — most clients are surprised at how fast each strip goes.

The most important factors for comfort are the wax type (hard wax is gentler on sensitive skin), the esthetician's technique, and how regularly you come in. First-timers always report that it gets easier with each appointment.

Price & Time

At Full Circle Beauty in San Diego:

  • Bikini Wax — $45, approximately 15 minutes
  • Brazilian Wax — $70, approximately 30 minutes

Both include premium hard wax and are performed in a clean, private room by a licensed esthetician.

Maintenance

Both styles last roughly 3–4 weeks. Because a Brazilian removes more hair, some clients feel it actually stays cleaner-looking longer — there's no partial growth to notice the way you might with a bikini line. We recommend booking every 4–5 weeks to stay on top of growth and keep appointments more comfortable over time.

Which Should You Choose?

Go bikini if you want a clean, neat bikini line for the beach or everyday freshness without full removal. Go Brazilian if you want everything smooth and don't want to think about it for 3–4 weeks. Not sure? Just let us know when you book — we're happy to talk through what's right for you before we start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Brazilian wax more painful than a bikini wax?
Slightly, because it covers more sensitive areas. But with hard wax and a skilled esthetician, both are very manageable. Most clients find the discomfort is brief and well worth the results.
Can I switch from bikini to Brazilian later?
Absolutely. Many clients start with a bikini wax and upgrade to a Brazilian once they're comfortable. Just let us know at booking and we'll adjust.
How long do both styles last?
Both typically last 3–4 weeks. Regular appointments every 4–5 weeks keep results consistent and make each visit more comfortable.
